A control transformer is basically an isolation transformer that is designed to provide a high degree of the secondary voltage stability. Electronic circuits that require constant voltage with a volt amp rating, generally use a control transformer. Control transformers are sometimes referred to as control power transformers, industrial control transformers or machine tool transformers.

The control transformer was designed for industrial applications where electromagnetic relays and solenoids are used.  These relays and solenoids are activated once the control transformer maximizes the inrush capability and output voltage regulation. To achieve proper control transformer specification, there are three characteristics of the load circuit that must be determined along with minimum voltage that is required to operate the circuit. They include total steady-state VA, total inrush VA and the inrush power factor.

✓ Total steady-state is - the volt amps that the transformer deliver to the load circuit in the amount of time that the current is required to hold the contact in the circuit.
✓ Total inrush VA is - when the volt amps of the transformer must deliver upon the initial energization of the control circuit.
✓ Inrush load power factor is - usually 40% power factor but is sometimes hard to determine without detailed analysis of all the load components.

A control transformer always is made with high quality insulating materials. The insulation on a control transformer electrically insulates all the turn to turn windings, the layer to layer windings along with the primary to secondary windings and ground. To ensure that the surface of the control transformer is sealed, they are vacuum impregnated with a VT polyester resin and then oven cured to eliminate any moisture. Making sure that the entire control transformer is filled will provide a strong mechanical device and also protect the device from the environment. The control transformer is not current limiting. It will allow enough current to pass through that is demanded by the load. Secondary overcurrent devices should be utilized. The control transformers also are not voltage regulating. The voltage changes are the function of the transformer's turn ratio. The variations in the input voltage will be proportionally reflected to the output.
