Output Transformers
Output transformers are transformers that will match the power output of an amplifier to impedance of a load. The output transformers have a varying current which is in the first circuit and it creates an altering magnetic field. The change on the magnetic field of the output transformers induces a change in the voltage of the second circuit. The basic overall job of output transformers is to convert power level voltages from one level configuration to another. Output transformers have two separate coils of wire that wind around a core that is made of iron sheets that we call laminations. The laminations on an output transformer are specially rolled and heat treated which improves the magnetic qualities that can be suitable to use with any frequencies from 2Hz to 500kHz. Output transformers are commonly used with tube amplifiers. The primary winding of one of the two coils of wire on the output transformer, accepts incoming power from the tubes. This provides high voltage and a low current. The wire on this winding consists of very fine insulated wire. The secondary winding on the output transformers uses a much thicker wire which suits the higher current and the lower voltage. Both the primary and secondary coils of wire turn with the secondary wire making fewer turns. Lowering the high voltage currents to safe levels is the main function of the output transformers. It also multiplies the weak tube currents to larger values. There are two different types of output transformers which is the SE output transformer and the push-pull output transformer. SE output transformers are used on single ended amplifiers and push-pull output transformers are used on push-pull amplifiers. The transformer core is not compensated with inactive current to the power tube when using a SE output transformer. The SE output transformer also includes a gap in the core to deal with the inactive current. The inactive currents of the two push-pull power tubes will cancel each other out in the core of the output transformer. The push-pull output transformer has a closed core with virtually very little gap in it. One thing to remember, is, you cannot use the push-pull output transformer with a SE amplifier.
