Potential Transformer

A potential transformer is a transformer that is used to monitor and measure the voltage on high voltage lines.  It also isolates metering and protection equipment from any high voltages. Since electricity is transmitted with thousands and tens of thousands volts, the potential transformer is used instead of a volt meter. This amount of voltage would truly destroy a volt meter.

A good example of a potential transformer is they are used for billing industrial customers or utility companies which provide the accurate voltages for meters that they are using. The potential transformer allows meters to take readings in which electrical services have a much higher voltage.

The potential transformer can step down voltage of a circuit to a much lower value. This step down of the voltage makes is safe to operate such devices as  voltmeters, ammeters, relays, and watt meters that are used for certain protective situations. Most potential transformers have models that can be used for metering AC voltages that range from 120 volts AC to 36,500 volts AC that have burden ratings up to 500 VA.

The potential transformer works along the same lines of other transformers as it converts voltages from high to low. The potential transformer is capable of working with either single or three phase systems. They are attached to a location in which it is very convenient to measure the voltages. The one difference from a regular transformer and a potential transformer is, the potential transformer voltage conversion will be constant and linear. This means that if 50,000 volts is stepped to 50 volts on the first day of operation, then on the last day of operation, it will remain the same. When talking about linear, this means that when the voltage drops, then the stepped down voltage will drop accordingly. This type of action ensures that the meter will scale accordingly. The potential transformer solves the measurement of voltages a lot better than a regular transformer.
