Variable Transformer
A variable transformer is a device that is used to change voltage. They are capable of changing the ratio between the primary and the secondary coils. You can adjust the amount of voltage change since some variable transformers have controls for automatic adjustment which maintain the voltage output. The voltage change is determined by what type of variable transformer is used. The design of the variable transformer is much like the shape of the toroidal transformer which is doughnut shaped. It will have a magnet steel core in which enamel covered magnet wire is very tightly wound around that steel core. The ends of the windings are securely fastened along with the entire winding being locked to the core. This is called lacquered locking. The variable transformer has a toroid periphery in which a track is machine around it. Rotating around this track is a carbon brush. This allows variable output voltage to separate the terminal. There are both single and three phase variable transformer applications. The single phase variable transformers are rated 120 volts or 240 volts. When a higher voltage is needed, it is done by combining the 120 volts or the 240 volt units. In a three phase variable transformer, there are three 120 volt units that are combined in a wye connection. The result of this is a 240 volt line to line three phase assembly. You could also use three 240 volts and combine them in the same way and your end result would be either a 380 or a 480 volt line to line three phase assembly. A variable transformer can also be connected in an open delta versus the wye connection. This is when two 120 volt units are combined for 120 volt line to line usage. In either assembly, higher current requirements are met by having consistent equal intervals of two or more units in the combined assembly. The variable transformer is quite often used as auto transformers. This allows the units to be wired in such a way that the configuration yields a higher voltage output as than what is applied as the input voltage. The increase in voltage using the variable transformer is around 15% higher than the applied voltage. The output on the variable transformer is more likely to vary between 0 volts and the 15% above the input voltage.
