Voltage Regulator
A voltage regulator is an electrical device that was designed to automatically maintain a constant voltage level in equipment. Depending on the design of the voltage regulator, it can be used to regulate one or more AC or DC voltages. The voltage regulator can use an electromechanical mechanism or a passive or active electronic component. Most all of the new electronic voltage regulators will operate by comparing the output voltage to the internal fixed voltage. The difference is amplified and will be used to control the regulation element. A negative feedback servo control loop is formed at this point. The regulation element on the voltage regulator is commanded to produce a higher voltage is indeed the output voltage is too low. It can also work in the reverse mode as well. If the output voltage is too high, it will in turn produce a lower voltage. The control loop on the voltage regulator should be designed to produce a desired tradeoff between the stability and the speed of the response to either lower or higher the voltage. Some voltage regulators are used on AC power lines. These type of regulators are called electromechanical voltage regulators. This type of voltage regulator works by selecting the correct tap on the transformer with multiple taps. When the output voltage is either too high or too low, the voltage regulator will switch the connections and will produce the appropriate voltage. These controls on the voltage regulator provide what we call a dead band. This means that the controller will not act and it prevents the controller from continuously adjusting the voltage to reach the desired target voltage. There is another type of voltage regulator called the linear voltage regulator. It operates by using a voltage controlled current. It forces a fixed voltage that will appear at the regulator output terminal. The linear voltage regulator has an active pass device that is controlled by a high gain differential amplifier. The output voltage on the linear voltage regulator is compared with a precise reference voltage and will adjust the pass. Vehicles use the voltage regulator to match the output voltage of the generator to the electrical load and also the changing requirements of the battery. The most common reason the voltage regulator is used is to protect electronic equipment from being damaged from all the voltage variations.
