Voltage Transformer
So what is a voltage transformer? It is simply a voltage changer and most voltage transformers are designed to step up voltage or step it down. There are some voltage transformers that are used to isolate one voltage from another. A voltage transformer will have primary and secondary windings. These windings on the voltage transformer will consist of aluminum or copper conductors that are wound in coils around the iron core. Each turn in the coils will determine voltage transformation of the voltage transformer. The primary voltage is shared equally with each turn of the wire in the primary winding. The same effect is induced with the secondary winding. When the secondary windings have a different amount of turns than the primary windings, a voltage change will be produced on the voltage transformer. When the turns in the secondary windings are less than the primary turns, it is then called a step-down voltage transformer, as the secondary voltage is lower. A step-up voltage transformer is when the primary windings have less turns than the secondary windings. A primary winding is not always a high voltage winding, but it is the winding that receives the energy. When both the secondary and primary windings share the same amount of turns, there is no change in the voltage. Always remember that a voltage transformer will not generate electrical power, it will only transfer electrical power. A good quality voltage transformer will use 100% copper wirings versus aluminum. Most smaller voltage transformers always use the copper wirings, however some of the larger voltage transformers will use aluminum wiring. The efficiency of the voltage transformer is increased when copper wiring is used and will also produce much less heat. The voltage transformer can vary in all different sizes. Some voltage transformers can be as small as a thumbnail and used inside a microphone or they can be very large to interconnect large segments of power grids.
